Have you ever returned from a weekend feeling truly fulfilled, knowing you've made a tangible difference in people's lives? That's exactly how I feel every Sunday afternoon after returning from San Quintin with the Flying Samaritans Mother Lode Chapter. San Quintin, Baja is home to a large farming community that grows tomatoes for both local consumption and export to the United States. While our dedicated volunteer team provides medical and optical care, the community's dental needs are particularly urgent. Many weekends, our dental clinic remains closed simply because we lack dentists and hygienists. Our patients are extremely appreciative of our caring for them, and "Gracias" is a word one often hears.
The Los Pinos Clinic offers everything you need to practice effectively with four fully functioning dental chairs with proper suction, air compressors for handpieces, a complete supply of gloves, gowns, and instruments, comprehensive restorative materials, and everything required for both restorative treatment and extractions. This experience offers so much more than just clinical practice, including adventure travel in small aircraft to reach our destination, accommodations at a comfortable beachfront hotel, and a wonderful balance of service and enjoyment.
A typical weekend begins Friday when we fly to San Quintin, enjoy happy hour at the hotel bar, and explore local street tacos. Saturday is a full and rewarding day of clinical work, followed by happy hour and dinner at Eucalipto, a special dining experience. There's also time to walk on the beach. Sunday, we return home by early afternoon, leaving you with that irreplaceable feeling of fulfillment and plenty of time to prepare for your work week. The clinics are on the second weekend of the month throughout the year. The approximate cost of $500 covers a portion of your pilot's gas money, hotel accommodations, and meals—and it's tax-deductible as a charitable contribution.
